Timber Bench

The design of the Timber Bench happened spontaneously through a dialogue between myself and the lumber. Old and broken, no longer capable of supporting joists, this heavy beam was discarded. The transformation from beam to bench was straightforward, but this simplicity was augmented in order to remove the rotten material, giving a new form. The massive holes left behind from the nails which once bound it to floor joist, influenced the use of brass tube to hold the cut beam to itself. To cut across the grain of wood is a violent act, one difficult to remedy with glue. In this case, the brass remembers the nail, and in a way, inverts their expression in a way that celebrates connection.
