GRADUATE THESIS PROJECT - The Charles River Basin Armature
(A comprehensive master plan proposal for the Charles River Basin)
- One of the largest undeveloped sites in the City of Boston, this urban void ambiguously lies at the intersection of three cities, yet offers no public value, amenities, or connective transportation links. A remaining testament to Boston’s Industrial Past, the site has experienced several cycles of dramatic change resulting from the expansion of Boston, the construction of bridges and damns, and the notorious Big Dig Project. This urban void currently divides these three cities; all containing rich networks of urban infrastructure.
- The site has one of the most intense concentrations of overlapping modes of transportation in the city, yet lacks the critical transportation connections and program to transform it to a vital district. The dynamic and vast array of highway and train systems that move through the site is a prime asset of the site, however greatly obstructs development, resulting in a colossal urban design challenge. Recent Efforts in the Charles River Basin including isolated parks and small-scale pedestrian bridges have yet to provide an integrated and cohesive plan for the urban void.
- This proposal aims at creating a comprehensive plan to revitilize the area and connect the urban fabric of these three cities across the site. With this intense concentration of overlaping modes of transportation, as well as an extensive system of railroad tracks running on ground level throughout the site, traditional development on ground level is not possible. This dynamic site calls for a dynamic form - A raised public armature; capable of spanning over railroad tracks and the river basin, as well as weave throughout the existing modes of transportation on site. The armature serves as the backbone of the site, while connective links branch off of the armature to connect to isolated parks, existing urban transportation systems, and other vital areas of these three cities.
