This a 2 and half years Master design thesis, and my thesis topic was investigating the Psychological impact of prison environment. The environment of the prison has enormous effects on inmate’s mental state, and directly influences the efficiency of the rehabilitation programs. An US prisons study shows many prisoners, on occasions even the prison staffs, especially women and children, become mentally ill or mentally unstable under the constrains of prison environment. The design of prison has an undeniable contribution to this phenomenon. This thesis is trying to bring a different perspective towards prison design in North America, viewing prisons as rehab centers. The aim is to study the impacts the prison environment have on the mind of its prisoners and staff, and propose a new design of a Juvenile prison for girls in Ottawa, in attempt to reduce mental stress through architectural space.

Carleton University, Ottawa, ON, CA, BArch, Architectural Studies

Bachelor of Architectural Studies is a 4 years undergraduate program. The study of architecture involves an exploration of diverse disciplines that influence the built environment. Architectural education is, by necessity, the most comprehensive course of university studies. It not only prepares students for a future in the profession of architecture but provides an extraordinary foundation for a multitude of interdisciplinary and related design fields. Students learn not only to handle the conflicting demands of function, aesthetics, technology and economy, but are trained in a variety of means of expression including writing, model-making, drawing, photography, video, digital media, and verbal presentations.
