My name is Justin Willard and i'm a senior architecture student at Miami University of Ohio. I never really knew what i wanted to do in high school, as far as a job is concerned, but i knew art was a passion of mine since elementary school. I love painting, drawing, and sketching and knew i wanted to do something with design. Senior year my AP art concentration was architecture and that's what made me choose this field as my future career.
One of my favorite buildings ever is Falling Water by Frank Lloyd Wright. I'm drawn to orthogonal buildings and look at shifting and overlapping rectangles when starting a design. Most of my designs from studio involve some sort of orthogonal geometry, but that’s not to say that all my designs are a four sided box. I start with a simple parti diagram and go from there.
My design process is actually pretty simple. I'm sketching ideas from the moment i start, to the final critique. Sketching is my main form of idea building and love to put my ideas onto a roll of trace. Once i've sketched out what i'm thinking i build a simple mass model to help imagine spaces and never put anything into the computer until my design’s final.
I spent my Fall semester of my junior year studying in Florence, Italy and cannot wait to return to the city. Living and studying in Italy has taught me a lot about architecture and design and hope to continue to use the things i learned with future projects.
