About

My passion is design.
As a lead designer, I establish the overall design direction, develop architectural design concepts and prepare documents.  I have worked on three to five projects of various sizes in various degrees of conceptualization or completion at any given time, supervised and critiqued the work of a staff of two to five people, and worked closely with a project manager and a studio principal to deliver a project that is on time and within budget, while working one on one with our client(s) to deliver a project that is the essence of their hopes and dreams.  Additionally, as one of two principal designers at H2L2 Architects/Planners, I instituted programs that brought the varied professionals within the office together, from monthly architecturally geared lunch and learns to special exhibits and in-office mentoring, as well as participated in and ran design reviews, either formally at a monthly pin-up, or informally at a team member’s desk.
As a project manager, I have managed projects ranging from a 350-seat college theater to a 2000-seat regional theater, from an arts complex in a series of renovated barns for a local township to a 90,000 square foot academic building for a local university.  I am able to switch hats, and to manage a project with the clients’ concerns regarding cost and delivery as paramount, as well as making sure that the firm’s goal to turn a profit is met.  I believe there is a symbiotic relationship between the design of and the management of a project, and I have been called the quintessential architect due, in part, to my ability to run parallel tracks.
As a participant in the marketing process, I have supported the marketing and business development activities of the office.  As H2L2 made the transition to Nelson, I wrote the studio’s design philosophy and have been involved in brochure graphics, project descriptions, and the output of many proposals.  At H2L2, I was a contributing member to firm’s re-branding effort, reorganized firm’s graphics and updated graphic presentations, was “editor in chief” for H2L2’s written presentations, and was involved in the monthly on-line newsletter.
As an educator and mentor, I have guided students from ten to twenty years old through a learning process about architecture.  I have been involved locally with mentoring since graduating from school, first with the defunct Foundation for Architecture, later with AIA Mentoring for Young Professionals and the University of Pennsylvania · PennDesign · Zell/Laurie Real Estate Center at Wharton, to my present long-term involvement with the ACE Mentoring Program.  I have taught at several local universities, and am presently an adjunct professor at Drexel University.  I love teaching and I learn from my students.  At the very least, I can say that I have helped change forever how someone sees the world around them.
As a professional architect, I am involved in the world around me, subscribing to professional websites, blogs and magazines, attending lectures, tours and AIA functions, attaining my CE credits and constantly increasing my professional knowledge by reading articles and books, participating in the occasional competition, keeping my sketchbook, representing in all my roles, the best of my profession.
My passion is design.
