Tonic Waters

Tonic Waters is the ideal contemporary home that creates an oasis of modern island living with a Caribbean flair. Nestled into the site’s secluded hillside, Tonic Waters provides a dramatic sense of arrival as steep slopes lead down uncovering the chic home surrounded by luscious tropical foliage.

Upon entering the home, the vibrant ocean vistas are uncovered further demonstrating the thoughtful siting of the home. The bright and airy open living areas feature 12 ft ceilings. Focusing on contemporary styling, natural elements of stone, wood, and granite artfully accentuate an understated, modern color palette.

Moving upstairs, the walkway overlooks the magnificent double height dining space. A series of slotted windows perfectly frame sunset views of the Dog Islands while the study opens onto the garage’s rooftop garden creating a tranquil island hideaway moments.

Shade is provided by a steel canopy cladded in ipe as you move outside to the pool and suspended Jacuzzi, while the exterior barbeque takes shade from the cantilevered bedroom above. The edge of the building, housing the master bedroom washrooms, is slightly rotated to capitalize on ocean views and provide depth. To accent this section, the side was also cladded in ipe to complement its surroundings.

The home’s design concept was intended to be durable, requiring minimal maintenance while ensuring maximum longevity in the harsh sea, salt, and sun environment. A carefully selected colour palette mimics the natural appearance of concrete and is accented with ipe and silver-grey accents throughout the contemporary island home.

The respect for the home’s natural environment is felt throughout the home and surrounding property due to its careful siting and sustainability initiatives. Rainwater is collected from the roofs and stored in a cistern. Hot water is provided by a solar water heater. Sewage is processed by an on-site septic treatment facility which safely discharges water directly into the local planted landscape. A natural beach line of vegetation and natural erosion control has been retained and celebrated.
