Bushwick Community Health

MKCA is the design architect for a new community health clinic serving an ethically diverse and rapidly changing community in Northern Brooklyn and Western Queens.

The clinic occupies a cluster of connected buildings in Bushwick, Brooklyn, including the historic former Hamburg Savings Bank, a Beaux-Arts structure constructed in 1914. Cascading ceilings and ribbed screens above, and integrated library shelving, benches and counters at ground level define spaces for circulation and a wide range of waiting areas for individuals, families, and groups.

An emphasis on maximizing natural light through skylights, clerestory windows, a double height atrium, and the space’s 30ft tall ceiling provides patients with an intuitive understanding of how to navigate in, through, and out of the clinic, and is one way that the architecture is specifically adapted to serve a patient population with a high number of non-English speakers. The abundance of natural light also ennobles and elevates the entire healthcare experience.
