Bedford Hall Longwood University

Steve recently completed an assignment in Farmville, Virginia.  Bedford Hall at Longwood University, houses the visual and studio arts programs. Moseley Architects, Virginia & North Carolina and HGA Architecture, Minneapolis — commissioned Steve to interpret their vision of the interiors and exteriors.

The arts program includes graphic design, art education, photography, crafts, art history, drawing, printmaking and painting. The expansion doubled the space of the 40 year old building. Renovations included reconfiguration of the interior spaces to maximize daylighting opportunities, updating finishes, a new fire detection system, mechanical, electrical, telecommunications and an access control system. The project is LEED registered and is pursuing Silver certification.

The photographic approach showcases the architectural design, specifically direct and diffuse daylight flooded spaces. This was achieved with a soft hand in high dynamic range software and critical evaluation of optimal sun angles. Careful consideration was given to the people that frequent the spaces, creating a somewhat complex HDR process.  Real academic situations were captured throughout the project, without disruption to the ongoing activities. This was achieved in collaboration with Longwood's professors, chairs, administrative staff and students. A generous distribution of Starbucks gift cards strengthened the good standing with everyone involved.

Dusk and twilight shots rounded out the coverage. Peruse the gallery of the 20 showcased images by clicking screen right.
