Education

The Cooper Union, New York, NY, US, BArch, Architecture

The Cooper Union offered a thorough and rigorous exposure to the discipline of architecture. The faculty included tremendous thinkers and innovators, including Ric Scofidio, Raimund Abraham, Lebbeus Woods, Diane Lewis and Dean Anthony Vidler. Each brought a unique perspective and a tremendous body of work to the table. Studying under them was a privilege.

Curriculum:
The studio courses began with ‘Architectonics,’ devoting a full year to an understanding of form, geometry, material, and abstract thinking.
Following this, students spent a year analyzing existing architecture (in our case Corbusian homes) and implementing the analysis in the design of a home.
From this scale we moved up to a full building in New York, with an introduction to city codes, zoning, and complex programming- understanding the challenge of maintaining conceptual rigor while confronting the technical and legal parameters of a given project.
4th year was spent analyzing an urban scale project and, as in 2nd year, implementing that analysis into an urban design proposal.
The 5th year is devoted to a student thesis, utilizing the built foundation to explore an architectural problem of the student’s choosing.
Added to the studio curriculum was a rich array of technical and philosophical courses offered by the architecture department, as well as a top notch humanities department.
