Rethink- Reverse

The skyscraper is a distinctive feature of Manhattan. The skyscraper-tower constitutes a symbol of capitalism. It is associated with power, authority, wealth and the vanity of the human being to reach the sky. Humans were always seeking to conquer the sky with the Tower of Babel being a good example. For this reason, we believe that a system is developed between the buildings and the sky-attractor.

Central Park is the only place that has retained the initial attributes of the Island. It is a natural place for fresh air in the center of Manhattan. The natural environment of the city is accumulated there, which makes it a pole of attraction. If we are to assume that the development of the city was extended inside Central Park, then the system ‘building-attractor’ would be reversed, since nature would in that case become the attractor.

By taking the above mentioned fact into consideration, our aim has been to replicate the form of the skyscraper, this time reversed, on the scale of a Pavilion. Through a sustainable design, our purpose is to create a structure that will respect the environment and will occupy the smallest possible land area. The Pavilion is vertically expanded, digitally acquiring the height it is missing through the use of new holographic technologies. The entry of the Pavilion to the skyline of the city is thus achieved.

Access to the Pavilion is enabled by inclined surfaces, which connect raised levels. Our aim is the creation of an ‘object’ in space, which the user may assign meaning to and determine its functions, such as periodical exhibitions, cafe-bars, resting spaces and screening rooms. The temporary nature of the construction facilitates its easy assemblage, dismantling, transportation, recycling and reproduction. Its transparency and visual permeability (openness) balances the structure with the natural environment.
