NorthWest Center for the Building Arts

The Northwest Center for the Building Arts is a conceptual project set in Portland, Oregon. The building was designed as an homage to the art that goes into design and buildings and a tribute to the classic materials used - wood, metal, and glass.

An adaptive reuse project, this design was housed by a historic building on the north Park Blocks of Portland. On a corner lot, the building allowed for a 20,000 square foot design with a 10,000 square foot addition on the roof.

Emphasis was placed on creating a dynamic layered space with high visual connectivity. Because of the workshop function of the building, noise control had to be recognized and therefore every space was its own yet connected through transparencies.

Scenes depicted below are 100% day-lit in the locations context. This was also an important factor in the glazing within this design.
