Kopo House Concrete Prototype

As part of a Christine Yogiaman’s Creative Research grant and continuing exploration of a juxtaposition between traditional Indonesian handcrafts and digital design and fabrication, this research and prototyping project develops a woven bamboo formwork panelized construction system for the exterior wall of a house in Bandung, Indonesia. The formwork is assembled from locally hand woven bamboo mats and CNC-cut plywood. The elevation of the exterior wall is composed of three panel types, each constructed by a configuration of bamboo mats, dowells, and plywood formwork. An initial prototype was developed in St. Louis, and a larger assembly prototype constructed in Jakarta, Indonesia.
