Hogeschool Van Amsterdam

Muller-Lulofshuis + Wibauthuis

Prominently located on the Wibautstraat, one of the city’s major radial routes, this unique and open “city campus” is an important intellectual and multidisciplinary node in the network that connects the University with other institutes, practicing professionals, and the city itself.

Three existing buildings and four new projects create a compact, vertical educational quarter that provides daytime and part-time education to almost 20,000 students, with a mix of academic uses, student residences, retail units, cafés, bars and restaurants, new public sports facilities, a crèche, a youth club, a students’ club and many new public external spaces, all integrated into the existing neighborhood.

A set of guidelines outlined an orchestrated effort to refurbish the existing buildings, add new facilities and create a high quality public realm that reflects the ambitions and objectives of the Hogeschool and provided a setting with a unique identity in a coherent and rich dialogue with the surrounding area.

Within the Amstelcampus, KPF designed three buildings: Wibautwoningen, a 120-unit student housing project with a student club and a children’s nursery on the van Musschenbroekstraat; Muller Lulofshuis, a 17,000 m² mixed-use academic, sports and residential building on the Tweede Boerhaavestraat; and Wibautgebouw, the Hogeschool’s main 32,000 m² building on the Wibautstraat, which houses a variety of public and private functions.
