Iceland’s primary aviation gateway, Keflavík International Airport, is situated on the southwestern coast of the country, about 50 kilometers from the capital of Reykjavik. KCAP’s master plan for the development of the area, has recently been shortlisted in the ‘Transportation’ category for ‘The Plan Award 2023’—one of the most respected awards in the design, architecture, interior and urban planning professions. An Italian print and digital publication, The Plan has a long history of investigative design journalism covering these subjects. The magazine is published eight times a year, and is oriented toward those working in these fields, diving deep into the concepts and ideas behind projects. The Keflavík Airport Area master plan, serves as a roadmap to guide the private-public partnerships responsible for the future of the airport and the areas surrounding it. Positioned at the beginning of a small peninsula, the airport is adjacent to several areas of low-rise, low-density buildings—a characteristic shaped by the country's unique geography and demographics. KCAP’s strategic master plan aims to seamlessly integrate the airport with these largely residential communities through a mix of densification, public walkways, and cycling paths. Moreover, the plan harmoniously aligns with Iceland's reforestation initiatives, weaving natural elements into the community fabric.

The winners will be announced during autumn of 2023.
