SHA is a full service architecture firm with an expertise in the preservation and restoration of historic buildings. Our approach to preservation is sensitive to the history of existing structures while pragmatic about their present needs, to ensure that these buildings remain active contributors to our urban fabric.
We are creative problem solvers committed to assisting building owners and property managers in diagnosing and remedying the myriad of issues that can plague new and historic buildings alike. Through traditional construction methods and new construction technologies, we find solutions to address both immediate and long term concerns of maintenance and preservation. We work closely with our clients to develop strategic, economically responsible recommendations for the repair of their buildings, and then implement the design and construction in an open, transparent line of communication.
We feel the strengths of our approach are based on:
•Design team leadership and close collaboration with clients, engineers, and other consultants
•Thoughtful design development
•Creative problem solving
•Prompt and appropriate responses
•In-depth knowledge and experience in specifying and detailing both traditional and new building materials
•Following through from commissioning to post-occupancy
We approach each project, large or small, with the same level of care. Beginning with a careful investigation of the conditions unique to each project, we integrate our client’s budgetary, programmatic and aesthetic goals to design the optimal solution for each of our projects.
As the first barrier against the elements, a buildings envelope is frequently the first to fail. The components which make up a building’s exterior are exposed to repeated thermal changes, wind, rain, and structural settlement. Likewise many new buildings are designed without a comprehensive waterproofing system and can leak even before construction is complete. Our specialty is in the analysis, restoration, and repair of these critical building components. Stone, brick and mortar, terracotta, wood, cast-iron, steel, sheet metal, waterproofing and roofing systems, windows, curtain walls, and vaults are a few of the components we have in-depth knowledge and experience in specifying, detailing, and fabricating.
In addition to exterior restoration, we assist clients in upgrading the interiors of their buildings, ranging from lighting, heating and air conditioner system upgrades to entire gut renovations and adaptive re-use of buildings which no longer serve their current function. We begin by assessing existing structures and systems and their appropriateness for the proposed or current program, including code compliance analysis, zoning and feasibility studies, building use type studies and cost estimates, and then assist with all architectural services required to implement the renovation.
We have extensive experience in the preparation of full and phased construction cost estimates, comprehensive conditions reports, construction drawings and repair specifications, forensic investigation, material selection and detailing, Landmark Preservation Commission and DOB filings, contract procurement and contract administration.
We feel our ability to integrate the design of new programmatic uses with the restoration of building shells is what makes our firm unique.
