Architect Duel III - Live Photos from NYC

Architect Duel III presents the main event: Killian O'Brien and Sarah Wayland-Smith of Balmori Associates vs. Sierra Bainbridge and Maura Rockcastle from Field Operations. These two teams of accomplished architects are set to take the stage at an undisclosed location in New York City this coming TSDY, January 23rd at 8 pm.

Shrouded in secrecy, the materials, tools and subject of the brief are a mystery to all until the night of the event. The competition will be split up into two rounds: sketching/planning, and building, as the teams race against the clock and play to the crowd. The building arena will be divided into two sections, preventing competitors from viewing each other’s designs during the competition. After time is up, each architectural team will have an opportunity to present their work to the audience, who will then select a winner by secret electronic voting.

The design brief was to create a green roof network across 4+ buildings in a StuyTown-like setting with provisions for water recycling, food production, green spaces, 2 bridges and foot & vehicular traffic. The archinect crew did the event justice with interviews, photos and video, and we should have more comprehensive coverage coming soon... It was a lot of fun.

Oh yeah- the participants had 25 pounds of cheese per team with which to complete their designs. People were definitely snacking on the models afterwards.

This was a fun event to cover, a little smelly but fun.

lb, this is put on by this group : http://www.thehappycorp.com/words/
they organize similar events in NY for other creative fields (from fashion to dance, to...). The events are just ways to bring creative people together and chill... What I'm saying is that they are probably not bringing it anywhere else, but...

Ok I really wanted to avoid saying this

stereotypes

two women on each team, and the model material happens to be 25lb of diary! Hmmm

Found the whole thing to be quite a letdown - Arch as spectator sport is hard to swing . I had the distinct impression while watching the whole thing was going to look a lot cooler in the photos than in real life.. the 3rd to last pic shows how the whole thing went down.. there was a strange smoke & mirrors sensation - as tho' the realtime event was less important than the archivable cool party photos that happy corp could add to their portfolio. Unfortunately I was sober the whole time-
.. it does bring up interesting ideas of How exactly could you make architecture a spectator sport - an architectural event would consist of what exactly, ?

C - don't you think the architectural design process viewed from a third peson is just boring as fashion design? But somehow, Project Runway has found a way to do it. I think if some very able and talented producers worked on it, America's Next Top Architect could be a great spectator sport and help shed some transparency onto an otherwise obfuscated field.

ARCH DL IV Jan 29

LVHRD begins the new year with ARCH DL IV. A crowd favorite, the Architect's Duel pits two teams of structural-soldiers against one another in a live model-building competition. A quick hand & steady mind are required, nerves of steel are encouraged.

Puddles, in answer to your question, architecture is becoming increasingly like the porn industry, eventually us guys will just be props.
