"Top Design" on Bravo

WonderK

You had to know this was coming:

Top Design

It's a TV show about, you guessed it, interior designers, which starts production in LA this month. With the editor-in-chief of ELLE Decor Magazine as a judge, I'm sure it will be a *colorful* representation of the design profession.......

the group picture isn't flattering to anybody in the group. if they were good designers they probably would have made sure they got veto power over the use of their likenesses.

maybe that might have also gotten someone a foot in the door to tinker with the awful graphic design of that website... nah, probably not.

this be a startin' in two weeks no? jan 31st tie-in to the end of top chef (go marcel !!) just like they hooked me tying into project runway ..

i saw the last met home issue 'white now' (nice pun, ugh) and todd old hams' design was the only one i skipped over. dreadful, busy, sad surface design he did.

I didn't watch the finale but they play that stuff non-stop so I'm sure I'll catch it eventually. Was it really bad? I am just interested to see what they did with their lofts since they each got one to design for themselves.

Shear Genius is going to be really funny.

The final two contestants were 2 of the most uninspired. Carissa only does one style, and does it to varying degrees of success depending on the number of pillows she happens to buy. Matt is a good decorator, but doesn't really step out of the box much. Goil and Andrea (oddly enough, both architects) were the truly exciting ones to watch. This is all my opinion, of course. I don't want to ruin it for you, but the expected outcome was the one that transpired.

well it wasn't horrible but i agree with charlatan that had one of the architects been in the final it would have been more exciting (but i am biased here..)

'twas a dream project - nice space, those santa fe lofts in downtown l.a. are hot

and a decent budget of around $160,000

but i thought bravo's time period for the thing was off - they gave the designers 2 months to design and 5 days to build.

seems it would have been better to do 5 days design, maybe 2-3 weeks to build, then make them live there for 4-6 weeks. you really learn if what you do works when you have to live in the space for a while.

what i hated about the program is the real disdain towards architects

sameolddoctor-

I know what you mean about the disdain. It's like they criticised them for doing something other than just shopping and placing objects in the room.

I almost felt insulted on the behalf of Andrea and Goil, when Adler said, "See you later, DECORATOR." I mean, granted, as a (new) archinecter, I'm going to be biased toward architects, but the show is called Top Design, and I'm not convinced that there was much real design coming from the mind of Carissa, or even Matt. Although, I did see a backyard done by Andrea on Outer Spaces on HGTV, so she's getting some further TV exposure out of this.

But, really. Is Elle Decor really as influential as the show made it sound? I read a lot of interior design rags along with the usual architecture and building suspects, and I've never once been compelled to pick up a copy. I don't know. Maybe I just like to bitch.

i'm probably the only architect here who actually enjoyed the show and thought that up until the last challenge the judges got it right. carissa's design i thought was very spatial and well-proportioned, and matt revealed himself to be simply a good decorator. matt's design had too many walls and the spaces were too long and narrow. carissa kept the open feel of the loft and used subtle changes in grade and screens to divide up the space. sting's wife recognized that carissa was more the architect, but the other judges, all interior designers/decorators, had already decided that matt would be the winner. too bad, carissa's design was better. i like all these shows. i even got into design star. good mindless fun after a long day.

The outcome was decided LONG ago. Those judges were fellatiating Matt from very early on.

yea charlatan, but sometimes, they had comments like 'oh yea because he is an architect, he thinks in this way' etc etc. Just seemed a bit derogatory.
I wish most interior designers (or decorators) and architects would view their relation as symbiotic and not as competitors

this show was horrible...and outside of Goils first project (that was a group one) he did poorly...his control of color was very bad...random and way too busy...

and what the hell is the profession of Interior Design anyway, high priced shoppers...uggh...and the, "see you later decorators" by Adler was like nails on a chalk board...and Odham was always on some serious pills...the show slowed down by half every time he spoke.

overall a crap show that was bad at worst...top chef and project runway are much better...Tim Gun and the head Chef engage the design issues much more clearly, as if they know what they are doing...unlike this decorator disaster.

Is the woman who teaches restaurant design at Otis still on there? I saw the "chef's room" challenge show, and was pleasantly suprised by her. When she was like "I have to win this, otherwise I'll be the laughingstock of my students..." I thought they were setting her up to get crushed like a bug.

Nah. She was 3rd place in the competition. She left last week. Andrea Keller is her name. She has her own firm. http://www.berrykeller.com ...
