you can be some much more disorganised and unplanned, you don't have to check a map before you leave for a meeting or the train times etc etc.
but yes, its just a phone!

I work and live in the city that Blackberry (RIM) built and I still have an iphone. The iphone can do anything the BB can do and so much more. Why does everyone knock it so much? Because its "trendy"?

I would suggest you get the Skype app (free) and sign up to pay $3 for calling. In Canada (not sure about the US) you can now use this app over the 3G network and not just WiFi. So basically for $3 a month you have unlimited long distance calling in North America. You can just sign up for the cheapest plan possible with your wireless provider to save money!

PLUS..............you can get this app: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OopwzJdfIak&feature=player_embedded

Its all well and good that iphone lets you be a lazy, disorganized piece of garbage but that still doesnt help me recieve a phone call from someone who is sitting on the patio of my apartment building.

How about a phone service that lets you....i dont know....revieve a phone call?

But for only an extra $150 I can get the 3G Micro-Cell to boost my signal....which ironically I can only buy from AT&T! Fucking assholes!

Why Blackberry is better:

-Iphone has never ending batter problems while my Blackberry can at last at least 15 hours even after a heavy usage.
-BB as flashing LED light indicating mail/texts.You have no idea when you get an email/text on Iphone 'cos nothing flashes.
-BB has QWERTY keyboard which makes texting and emailing much easier.I felt like throwing the friggin Iphone off of a bridge just because of the texting difficulty+ auto correction it has.I can type a 5 sentence email in 1 minute with Blackberry but I can't type 1 sentence in 2 minutes with Iphone.
-You can use BB with one hand.
-Email system is more secure and easier to use.It takes 2 buttons to reach your email.
-BB is the best business phone out there.
-Iphone has no cut and paste option.I had a friend pointing out some new feature of Iphone she was like "Oh look I can the change the color of blah blah like this" and I said "What the f**c I do with the colors if I can't even cut and paste something!!!?"
-You can't forward texts in Iphone.
-Iphone has no speed dial.
-Blackberry is more durable.I dropped it a couple of times and it is still working well.

So basically Blackberry is for saving time and Iphone is for killing time.BB is much more functional but the only advantage of Iphone is "oooohhhhh the colorssssss".That's it.

Blackberry is one of the only 'expensive' phones on the market currently bragging about their storage in terms of megabytes.

As far as the business aspect, BB requires either a very expensive subscription services or a very expensive server set up to use the VPN aspects of the phone.

Although less secure, iPhone/Android/Windows can all sync to VPNs through the standard internet over both WiFi and 3G.

You can cut and paste on an iPhone but simply clicking down on text and holding down for 2 seconds until the dialogue pops up.

Formatting text on a phone is worthless because most phones do not support formatting tags.

iPhone has both voice activation and a search function, speed dial is not necessary.

iPhones "push" notifications will make the phone beep and vibrate until noticed.

Other than that...
The battery life and the keyboard suck. However, if you turn off all the internet connectivity, the battery life is pretty good.

I've found that the iPhone constantly likes to download data all the time. Which is great if you like real-time weather, real-time stocks, it checking your email and twitter every 3 seconds or it leaving you logged into facebook.

when i wanted to get a smart phone i looked at the all the alternatives, tried to be rational and logical but in the end i went with my gut consumer desire/feeling/(advertising brainwash)...i bought the iphone because i liked the way it looked and felt in my hand.

Internet is one of the most important features I use in a phone. Why should I turn it off? If you turn internet/email off how are you going to handle business situations?

On the Iphone I had cut and paste feature was not available. My friend told me I needed to hack to phone to unlock that feature.

I pay 80$ for my BB with unlimited texting and internet.I switched from AT&T because if I kept using AT&T I was going to have to pay around 100$ for the same features.

But, really... these little snickerfests are absurd subjective and preferential arguments. Really, the iPhone is just a cellphone that someone got what people wanted 75% of the way there.

Smartphones have been around for years-- 2000, 2001? At first, no one could develop a data plan for them. Finally, someone came out with a data plan that was like $200 a month.

Then, for about 6 years after that, no one really made applications for phones than didn't cost $30 dollars a piece.

The iPhone was just a good combination of coming out at the right time, being pretty and had support, although a bit closed, to make app writing for cellphones easy and worthwhile.

"I pay 80$ for my BB with unlimited texting and internet.I switched from AT&T because if I kept using AT&T I was going to have to pay around 100$ for the same features."

My iPhone contract is only $29.99 a month with unlimited texting, internet and 250 minutes a month (from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.). Last years Christmas sale at AT&T was bananas!

I've also had basically the same cell phone number and the same cell phone contract for 12 years though. And my iPhone only ended up costing me $69 bucks.

I was specifically addressing when using a VPN service.

If you want to tether your phone to an email service (to your phone to work), that service is an additional $40 a month if you buy it from your cellular provider.

Then, if you want 'corporate' services... there's another additional $45 a month. So, $85 a month just to be able to sync my phone up with my work email, calender and work network?!

Even if I had a job, I'd rather stick to the old, disgusting porn-filled internet rather than shell out money for corporate connectivity.

Well put Unicorn Ghost.

For me, the internet is the biggest feature. I use it constantly everywhere I go. I have a mini laptop that can also make phone calls. Yes, BB's have internet too, but it is very clumsy to use. Most BB's have a crappy track ball that makes operating the phone so primitive.

I pay $70/month for unlimited data, text, voicemail and a good amount of minutes, so I'm not sure why everyone thinks it is expensive.

@ STONES:
A lazy, disorganized piece of garbage? How do you figure? You are telling me you would rather look up an address on yahoo maps, print it off or copy down directions like a tool? I love the fact that my phone is also very good at getting me around no matter where I am. It is a communication tool, not just a phone.

As for the service, it sounds like you have an incompetent service provider. I have had the iphone 3G and now iphone 4. I have never had a dropped call nor have I experienced any lapse in service (except way out in the country).

Since people think something like iphone improve our life, they demand us to do more things.

We have to work and entertain and eat and walk and something and something at the same time because people think technology makes us to do mutli-tasks.

Some day I guess we would have to work during sleeping......

I was regurgitating what someone else said about being disorganized and unplanned.
And I never said anything about my preferences on how I look up an address....which can be easily done on any phone with internet. Maybe you are just offended that I called someone a lazy piece of garbage?

You dont think smart phones/internet have made people lazier?

Oct 27, 10 4:12 pm  ·

I wasn't offended in the slightest. I don't take offence to silly comments. You added "lazy" and a "piece of garbage" btw. I just didn't see how that had anything to do with an argument against the iphone. If anything the phone makes me MORE organized and flexible. I don't wish to get in a pissing match , expecially not through this medium. I just didn't understand your comment.

Of course smart phones/internet make people lazier. I think that most technology is aimed at making things easier/better and laziness is the by-product. The invention of the car is a good example because it has made people utterly unwilling to travel by foot.

For me, the internet is the biggest feature. I use it constantly everywhere I go.

Yeah, I know. You are one of the millions of people who spend every waking moment of your life with your screen glued to your iPhone screen, oblivious to the person sitting across the table from you, the movie you paid $20 to see in 3D, the car you are about to rear-end, the studio review you are far too important to actually pay attention to...

So yeah, I guess the iPhone did improve your life because now you can be the detached post-human you have always dreamed of being AND be a part of the hipster kids club.

As for the whole directions thing, well unless you are traveling, it's called knowing the city you live in. I always love the people who use a GPS device to navigate the city they live in on a daily basis and then when the GPS isn't working have no idea how to get around because they never took the time to look at a map, learn the freeways and their exits and figure out in what direction various parts of town are in. It's really not that hard, and this comes from someone who lived in LA.

The GPS also eliminates the joy of getting lost, taking a wrong turn and discovering a street you have never been on. These small adventures make a boring day turn into something exciting, unplanned. The GPS device just bitches at you from deviating of course and then immediately tries to restore order, like some crazed type-a passenger, hell-bent on efficiency.

I am curious why using a pen and paper makes someone a tool?

your screen = your face. Although, most people are about as blank as a screen, so I guess maybe I did mean that.

@ Cherith

WOW, you got all that from one sentence from me? You must be a super genius. I find it troublesome that you assume so much about people to try and offend them when you have no idea what you are talking about. Must make you feel good to get all that out :)

Funny actually. I am sports playing, socialite and community contributor. I don't think I have ever been remotely referred to as being a "hipster" haha.

I use my phone to get information faster and more efficiently, not to follow justin beiber on twitter. It helps me get business done and that is valuable to me.

and yes, I travel a lot.

incompetent service provider? you have an iPhone, you have AT&T....unless you are savy enough to crack the phone to use an alternate provider.

I live in a major metropolitan city....why if I pay nearly $100/mth for a service do I have to goto my rooftop to send/recieve a txt msgs? Actually I dont think it matters how much I pay a mth for crappy service...its a service I pay for and dont get.

versatility.

if there is any one day my iphone cannot fulfill my needs, i can code up a solution, toss it to cydia and load it into it.

developing for iphones > developing for bb.

anyways, i read the news on the way to work, use readitlater on it too for when i find something I don't have time to finish reading while at work and want to get to it while on the way home.

buying music on impulse = awesome.

twitter through seesmic and facebook = great way to keep in touch with people that are on the other side of the country.

pandora = musical relief any time i want.

evernote = centralized depository of notes from when i'm working on a computer and need to carry information with me (addresses, other small notes, etc).

anyways... that's what i do with mine.

lol

you must have read a thread of mine from say 5 years ago to get that info. Havent lived on LI since 2006

I live in San Francisco and work in Berkeley...service is pretty shitty in the office too - but we since got the 3gmicro-cell and service got alot better here. The apartment building i live in is on the first floor of a 4story walk up (you got me there) but it aint concrete....wood frame construction. Walls are hallower then a whores crotch on slutty Sundays. No reason to have bad service - there are many dead zones in SF...

On this side of the world the bridge-and-tunnel people live in Berkeley/Oakland

i realized something after i lost my Bberry and had to use a normal phone for a while. a phone is like a friend, and the iPhone is the most popular person in high school - it keeps you in the loop and knows where the best parties are.

re: the thread question - my favorite app is Qando, a real-time timetable for Vienna public transport... essential in the winter months. the language apps are very helpful too. it saves me from carrying around a pocket dictionary and translator.

One of my co-workers has "ORB". He has it connected to his computer at home and can watch his local cable and monitor his dogs during the day via webcam. It's pretty impressive!

"Shazam" is a cool app too. It can detect songs and tell you what they are.

nypencil_i've bought a grip of em. the first two on that list don't require any cellular or wifi connection, which is important. all of them should have multiple languages available except dict.cc, which is only in german. most were a few euros, none more than 5, i think.

ultralingua - verb conjugation
dict.cc - dictionary
wordroll - dictionary
accelastudy - study guide
flashcards - DIY flashcard app
