As we are becoming a team of competent makers and multifaceted designers, we have just transformed our workspace into a stylist studio with the design of our own desks.  The desk is the second piece of furniture to be made in house, the former being the successful HUT Gin Trolley designed earlier this year, which is situated at the entrance of the studio.

The concept, drawings and prototypes of the desk were headed up by HUT architects Alex Arundel and Joe Magri, with the whole team being involved in the construction in HUT’s new workshop.

The eighteen desks (one for each HUT member) are constructed out of Birch plywood and have a customised coloured linoleum top. The desk, cut using CNC technology, is designed to be in twelve pieces that can easily slot together with no additional fixings and remain in place with adhesive glue.  The accuracy and speed of the CNC manufacturer ensures a precise and streamlined finish to the desk, with no visible joints, sharp edges and a soft grain. A cable tray and a grommet hole on the interior underbelly provides efficient and neat cable management. At hand reaching level is a small hidden ‘glove compartment’ for storage and to minimalise desktop clutter.

The linoleum tops stretch over one-half of the desk providing colour and individuality. Available in a range of shades including Smokey Blue, Olive and Ash, the team were able to pick their own colour according to taste. The tones blend comfortably alongside each other, reflecting a Scandinavian palette, complementing the birch plywood aesthetic and the original woodwork of the warehouse. The linoleum’s flush surface is also practical and comfortable to work on, the rubber is scratch resistant and easily maintained, which was a key consideration due to its high usage.

Building on the success of the HUT Gin Trolley designed earlier this year, the HUT Desk continues the practice’s interest in artisanal and specialised pieces of furniture, whilst simultaneously creating a beautiful studio space for ourselves.
