Gross-Rosen, Stone Hell

The project’s concept proposal to commemorate hundreds of thousands of victims of the forced labour Gross-Rosen Concentration Camp has been subordinated to the idea of highlighting the historic part of the quarry excavated at the time when the Concentration Camp was in operation. The project’s overarching idea is to create a sculptural and architectural composition at the preserved quarry, underscore its specific operational characteristics, and commemorate the victims in a symbolic, simple, and contemporary form. In the course of a symbolic passage in the footsteps of the victims, visitors will have opportunity both to go deep into the quarry and watch it from the level of the surrounding heights. A look at the historic excavation from two perspectives: lower (the level of the platform over the water surface) and upper (the level of the heights surrounding the quarry) makes it possible to experience unusually intensive empathy with the victims of the former concentration camp.
