bitMAPS (Calgary Exhibition)

PROJECTiONE was invited to exhibit work at the Kasian Gallery within the Faculty of Environmental Design (EVDS) at the University of Calgary by Assistant Professor of Architecture, Jason Johnson. Work from our thesis at Ball State University was presented along side a new version of bitMAPS, and multiple MyLights.

This installation of bitMAPS experiments with the use of master graphics within the system. Previous prototypes used abstract patterning as a base image, while this example tests the system’s ability to create recognizable images. A “self portrait” bitmap was created of the PROJECTiONE members and run through a Grasshopper definition to generate all fabrication file types. The major difference in our process of this version was the creation of a series of prefab panels rather than an individually applied tile. Vertical panels of 2×8 tiles were created as units that could be hung with wall cleats, minimizing on-site assembly time and simplifying transportation. We drove the project and other exhibit contents from home base in Muncie, IN all the way to Calgary, allowing for a sweet road trip and negating shipping/flight costs.

We would like to thank Amy Wowk and Yuting Zhu, students at the University for their help installing the exhibit, as well as Jason for extending this opportunity to us. The exhibition will be up until through December 10, 2010. We encourage you to check it out if you are in the area.
