The Paterson International High School, completed in 2008 is the highlight in an academy system envisioned by Paterson Public Schools, developed by dedicated committee of educators, administrators and consultants in the spirit of the United Nations. The NJSDA directed project is situated on a 4 acre site, making up a 115,000 SF facility and housing 500+ students.
The narrow site is tightly bounded to the south by Route 80 and Garret Mountain, which posed an interested design challenge. L+C Design’s response resulted in program spaces (classrooms, labs, and common areas) centered around a 4 story sky lit Atrium. This reinforces the internal student community and brings natural lighting to the center of the building. Vertical circulation is via a monumental stair on the Atrium which looks out toward the City of Paterson’s business district to the East, and the raceways of the Historic District to the Northeast.
