Mark Taper Forum Renovation
The Mark Taper Forum is the centerpiece of the Los Angeles Music Center. The updated interiors are directly influenced by the original glamour of the New Formalism design and were inspired by a distinct and precise tradition of craftsmanship and detailing of the original building. The new finishes are modern and classic, and pay homage to the beautiful form and geometry of the 1967 Welton Becket-designed building. The renovation and expansion brings the building into an era where big productions are the norm and sensitivity to patrons needs is respected and required to remain relevant. The new lounge was subtly placed below the plaza, so the exterior could be respectfully restored. The mottled metallic colors of the original abalone wall are now infused throughout the building. By accentuating parts of the building with customized finishes and elements, the updated design honors the original architecture and brings new life to it.
