AIRPORT IN SARATOV

The new airport in Saratov is one of the first airports in the modern history of Russia, that was built in the open field. The role of our bureau was to create an architectural concept of the whole complex and also of the passenger terminal. The airport was named by Yury Gagarin – the first cosmonaut in the world history. Gagarin studied in Saratov Aero college, and then he landed here after the first space flight. So the central point of the whole complex is a circle of grass with a metal sphere – an image of space capsule. A number of circular waves diverge from this place, reflected in the main façade structure. The wave image has something in common with other symbols of the region – the great Volga river, as well as the famous music instrument – accordion, that was made in Saratov in 19 century. The interior of the terminal continues the space theme. The key element is a serie of skylights, that look like soaring objects. Other parts of the interior (duty-free pavilions, resting areas, etc.) are also designed in cosmic theme. The most unusual part of interior space is a serie of interactive installations telling about the history of Russian cosmonautics and turning the airport building into a modern cultural point.
