form-ula is founded by and composed of three individuals coming from three very different places, but sharing a similar thread within our architectural education, as well as, sharing a common interest to be part of a design process that takes a multitude of ideas and relationships to produce exciting architecture. Our interest is to contribute to the profession that has a long rich history, and to be present and actively engaged in the discussion of shaping the future of architecture. These are what produces the links form-ula needs to sustain a progressive practice. As we begin to understand more about form-ula, we have come to realize that it is formalized through a collaborative effort that reaches out beyond our immediate profession and seems to never solidify into a discrete form, but rather a core that is in a state of constant expansion that represents the future of architecture. This is what
form-ula is about, the future more than anything, all at the same time looking back at the past to understand the trajectory of where architecture/design arrived from so that we can maybe start to understand how we can add to the layers.
As we begin to understand our role in the architectural profession during this challenging economic environment, we have come to realize that our practice is formalized through a collaborative effort that reaches out beyond our immediate profession for diversification. These external conversations with art, history, technology, politics and science are the driving forces that have consistently calibrated our design practice over time. It is important to us that we begin to look towards the future with an approach that is open-ended with the idea of extending this conversation with whom ever is interested in participating both physically and virtually. Our practice at its core principals, explores both the “culture of performance” and the “performance of culture”. These interchangeable conceptual frames of “culture” and “performance” are driven by scale, program, global positioning, energy and material flow. The culture of performance and the performance of culture becomes a catalytic condition for which serves as an entry point for architecture and design. We analyze the cultural organization of structures, the consistencies and inconsistencies of prevailing cultural patterns, its ability to adapt with climate shifts, and the pursuit for cultural change is why we identify these as strategic design concepts to play out the game of architecture. The cultural artifacts of space are critical in-order to begin to project into a future where our sustainable methods are not just understood as superficial applique, but rather a much deeper understanding of a holistic design approach that will constitute a very different profession.
form-ula can be positioned in many ways within the architectural profession. We are a small firm. We are a inter-disciplinary firm. We are a firm interested in both large and small scale projects. We are a research based design practice and what is most important to us is that we have always envisioned form-ula as a vehicle that will allows us to project into the future.
