Hayhurst and Co. is an award-winning London-based architectural studio established in 2004 by Nick Hayhurst and Jonathan Nicholls.
Through our diverse portfolio, we have established a reputation for designing environments that are sensitive and sustainable, innovative and humane, and refined and delightful. We are interested in designing environments that enable and support communities, and spaces that respond inventively and pragmatically to patterns of life and physical contexts. There isn’t a ‘look’ to our projects: each design is a unique and tailored to respond to the people our projects are for, the site the space will sit in and the budget available.
We are interested in landscape and materiality, and nature and domesticity and we have explored these themes through projects at every scale. From the design of a window to sit in, to the refurbishment of a space for a community, to the design of a new school and to the masterplan of part of a city.
We work collaboratively with our clients and have been commissioned by a variety of public and private sector, third sector and individuals. We have an excellent record of delivering complex briefs within cost and programme constraints. We have worked with both traditional and design and build procurement routes through all RIBA stages, have led design teams and carried out the role of Lead Consultant and Contract Administration on small bespoke projects as well as complex and multi-million pound, multi-phased schemes.
Our completed projects have won RIBA Awards in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017 including the RIBA London Best Small Projects of the Year in 2012, the NLA Best Education Building in 2013, the AJ Retrofit Best Education building in 2014 and the International Architectural Review Schools Award in 2015. In 2016, our ‘Garden House’ was shortlisted for the RIBA House of the Year and in both 2016 and 2017 our houses have featured on Grand Designs: RIBA House of the Year.
Our work has been widely published nationally and internationally and we were runners up in Young Architect of the Year (YAYA) 2012 and shortlisted for Architect of the Year in 2016 (Education) and 2017 (individual House). We were featured in the Architecture Foundation’s 2016 publication ‘New Architects 3 – Britain’s Best Emerging Architects’.
