#ArchinectMeets is a series of interviews with members of the architecture community that use Instagram as a creative medium. With the series, we ask some of Instagram’s architectural photographers, producers and curators about their relationship to the social media platform and how it has affected their practice.
Social media has undeniably affected the way we perceive, interpret and share opinions about architecture today. While we use our own account, @Archinect, as a site for image curation and news content, we wanted to ask fellow Instagram users how they navigated the platform.
We spoke to Ksenia Shestakovskaia about their Instagram, @decorhardcore. Decoration may be a field associated with elegance and restraint, but the world exposed by @decorhardcore is one of extravagance and indulgence. It is a world that can yield either restraint or transgression, but at its most extreme, in the words of of Shestakovskaia, "Hardcore is not for everybody."
How did @decorhardcore begin?
@Decorhardcore began in 2015 as a collection of images of "emotional furniture" from eBay, (that will be complied in the book and printed in the coming 2019) that I have picked through endless scroll through my favorite shopping platform. Being fascinated by my finds, I have decided to share it with the world receiving an immediate encouragement and adoration of many and raised eyebrow of some...

How does the curation of @decorhardcore influence the work you produce outside of it?
Working as a textile print designer, I am quite familiar with the search for texture, color and elements references, @decorhardcore research just expanded research into interior fields. I might have noticed a more approving attitude of my colleagues towards my tastes; other than that, I still design flower repeats for summer collections and stars for the winter ones :)

What have you hoped to communicate about architecture or the built environment through your posts?
I truly hope that decorhardcore at least from time to time manages to sparkle imagination and creativity, as well tolerance towards things unusual or falling outside of spectrum of a ''good taste'' consensus. With no aim to change perceptions i simply hope to sooth ones day with a colorful, dreamy, pattern breaking image.

Were you collecting these images before you had a social media presence, or did social media encourage you to take image curation more seriously?
I have started from eBay, moved to real estate sites, and dear followers report treasures daily from all the possible parts of the world.
I repost a lot as well, promoting fresh and humble artists and quite often total armatures happen to snap a lucky shot.
From time to time i also do a film and music album covers retrospectives.. I guess i have always been a visual junkie snooping for treasures in a trash bins, there might be a chance i dig through more of those lately, but again, it suits my nature.
