Barneys New York // LGBTQ+ Center

Barneys New York being a leader in the fashion industry influences a wide spectrum, from large department stores to local boutiques. I wanted to take advantage of this strong influence and change the way people think, and experience shopping.

The space organizes merchandise by designer rather than gender, erasing the invisible boundary between men’s and women’s fashion. The heavily curated store will feature designers that challenge the norm, like Rad Hourani, Acne Studios, 69, Off-White, Saint Laurent, Vaquera, and Marc Jacobs. Providing a shared, comfortable and safe space for whomever is shopping, regardless of their gender identity.

To increase the impact this store could make for the community, I designed it to collaborate and share space with the local phoenix LGBT center, working as an extension to the nearby office north of the site; giving the LGBT community a strong identity in the heart of downtown and educating the public with events and exhibitions in partnership with Barneys.

All the furniture in the space was designed to both challenge the norm in gendered shopping spaces, by playing with classic boy vs girl color schemes and metal mixing. I also wanted to connect the Interior with the history of the building, The furniture and lighting design though modern, plays homage to the Victorian era from when the building was first built, to the art deco era from when the building was stuccoed over and given a new life in the 1930’s.
