Churchill Recreation Center Expansion

The project consists of an approximately 5000 square foot addition to the Churchill Recreation Center, a City of Dallas facility at Hillcrest and Churchill Way.  The addition provides an enlarged and upgraded workout facility and locker rooms as well as a new multi-purpose meeting room.  Sensitivity to the existing site and building and a sustainable approach were paramount to this design, as well as a “refreshing” of existing finishes to make the center more inviting to the local user.  The building expansion respects the ruses the existing materials and maintains the visual datums throughout the facility. Yet new and environmentally sensible sunshades are added to reduce heat loads and visual glare while retaining desirable views into the park.  A curved south building form was derived to maintain optimal distances from existing tree canopies and an iconic tree dedicated to a local councilwomen is framed at the the end of the corridor.
