The idea is to redesign a section of a city through a systematic restructuring to create stimulating environments in which the people actively interact with the space and with each other, and the environments are defined by this dynamic. We envisage an innovative urban project in accordance with the criteria of “Landscape Sensitive Design”, which considers not only the effect produced by the work in itself but also, and above all, the effect as felt by the people who inhabit the space and the impact on the very identity of the location.

Foundations:

  1. Interpretation of place. A sensitive reading of the location provides the key elements which inform the project: pre-existing urban forms; green areas; historic avenues of trees; the hospital; points of reference at the margins of the volumetric elements.
  2. Construction of the generative system. Defined by forms, cuts and views, it contrasts with the uniform fabric of the city, creating the prerequisites for a complex spatial configuration which is articulated by its margins, dissonances and rotations.

With this premise the proposal founds itself upon the project’s interrelated themes which themselves define the overall form of the work.

  • Public pathways _ taking the physical action/act of walking as its foundation, the landscape melds with the urban system in a network of multidirectional walkways which, spatially reintegrate the whole area according to a permeable installation plan connecting adjacent areas. Permeating the landscape, this network of paths create an experience of continuous discovery, as by carefully calibrated degrees the environments reveal themselves as they are further explored.
  • Public spaces _ numerous and diverse, they create a discrete system of environments characterized by specific functions: from that of filter between the proposed complex and the city at large, to being true and actual urban squares. They encourage a collective social dynamic which realises the social dimension of our proposal, that is, rejecting insofar as is possible the exclusively private use of the buildings.
  • Integrated roof-garden _ through operations of extrusion, bending, modification and landscaping, an area of artificial parkland is constructed over a building, which, accessible in its entirety to pedestrians, continues the main park and integrates man-made with the park and reinforces the formal and perceptive continuity between the different zones of the work.
  • Green area and water system _ composed by different types ( tree avenues, diffused green areas) and thematic characteristics: (sensorial and water gardens, landscapes) it reinforces the combination of the paths, giving the opportunity of having heterogeneous experiences.
  • The definition of functions through the spatial-architectonic conformation.
  • Sustainability

The result gives a formal synthesis determined by dynamic relations and differences, expressed in every different level of landscape interaction between spaces and objects, in which the concept of reintegrating architecture and city is strongly conjugated in a challenge which combines the specific disciplinary ranges in a particular “urban-tecture”.
