Kakuma Kiln: Refugee Marketplace

The market isn’t solely defined by the transactions that occur between vendor and buyer. It is a culmination of the continuous exchange of ideas, technique and perceived value within a community. In Kakuma, where both resource and a strong consumer-base for local businesses are lacking, it is imperative to further a market that can reach those who are affected the most and stimulate a continuous interaction.

Currently, there exist 11 markets within Kakuma which hold economies supported by donations, refugee-owned businesses and outside participants. The trade that occurs amongst the refugees is sought for in order to supplement the lack of variability and shortages that inevitably do occur. Nevertheless, the general scarcity isn’t always solved through this trade and refugees sometimes cannot access the basic resources needed for housing along with daily survivability. To be able to take advantage of economic opportunities in Kakuma, people should be provided with the basic necessities. Just as capital is necessary for business to occur, stability provides opportunity that extends beyond the present scale of the camp.
The proposed  ‘communal kiln’ provides the tools to access previously inaccessible abundant  raw resources in Kakuma. Through a ‘solar kiln’ sunlight can be redistributed as an energy source and a transformative tool. The torrential downpours can be funneled and stored to ensure support in later use. Subsidiary activities beyond providing basic necessities is capable of  evoking diverse activities within the camp: strengthening clay bricks against difficult climates, providing a sanitary tool for water, or perhaps even establishing a ceramic workshop that reflects creative qualities of diverse cultures. Vulnerable residents will be supplied with the ability to sustain themselves independently within Kakuma.
