Kona Airport

This project reimagines Kona Airport as more than a

transit hub, integrating Hawaiian architectural elements
to craft a vibrant community plaza. Utilizing
locally sourced timber and folded concrete, infused
with ash from lava, the design embraces sustainable
materials while paying homage to the island’s natural
surroundings.
Departing from conventional airport structures, the
open balcony design seamlessly connects travelers
with the environment, transforming the space into a
communal hub. Serving as a much-needed gathering
spot for local residents, the airport plaza becomes
a symbol of unity and a unique expression of
Hawaiian architectural principles in a contemporary
setting.
