The Atrium

This 3 Star hotel, located in the burgeoning town of Birtamode in Jhapa, is only an hour's drive from the Nepal-India border. The overall program is distributed in 4 different courtyards that serve as dedicated spill-out spaces for Hotel, Meeting, Banquet and Casino Blocks.

The hotel block includes 90 rooms, two dining venues, and a health club with an outdoor pool area. The meeting block attached to the hotel houses various conferencing facilities of varying sizes.

The banquet block is an independent, large-format venue for large-scale functions. Similarly, the casino block has two levels of gaming floors with its own dining area.

The design of the buildings are simplified responding to cost and construction timeline. Their massing strategically responds to the frontages and climatic orientation. While the façade of each block is rudimentary, the integration of landscape is prioritized to reduce the solar exposures on the walls and roofs. Responding to a warm climate, the interior spaces are airy and tall. Series of atriums serve as wayfinding spaces that visually and physically link indoor common areas with important outdoor spaces.

The burst of colors that vary from one interior space to the other is an affordable strategy that creates a memorable guest experience as well as a distinctive identity for the hotel.

The immediate landscape design emulates the tea estates and betel nut groves omnipresent throughout the locale. The diversity of indigenous trees are purposefully located to frame views as well as to provide much needed shade during the summer.
