In May 2007, the city of Greensburg, Kansas and its hospital were destroyed by an EF-5 tornado. Health Facilities Group helped plan and design a replacement facility. The new hospital was designed to LEED Platinum standards and is the first LEED Platinum Critical Access Hospital in the country. Key elements of the sustainable design included wastewater management and reuse; a wind turbine to generate power; a frictionless chiller; extensive use of natural daylighting; and use of recycled materials throughout the interior. The new hospital includes a family practice clinic which includes specialty areas for ophthalmology and dentistry. There is also a state-of-the-art day care facility, wellness center, and the basement includes a storm shelter area that can accommodate patients, staff and local residents in case of another tornado.
