Cotulla City Hall Restoration Project

Cotulla City Hall Restoration Project - Cotulla, TX 2019-2021.

Located on the southeast corner of South Main and Carrizo Street in the city of Cotulla, the ca.1925 former car showroom and service station in the Spanish Colonial Revival style underwent restoration and adapted to serve as the entry and supplemental offices to a new, modern city hall building to be built at rear.

Hansel worked Able City Architects and Briscoe Architectural Conservation to ensure the restoration followed the Secretary of the Interior Standards (SOI) for Rehabilitation. A new roof was installed, roof joists were installed at the entry porch, the corner pilasters were reconstructed, and supplemental metal columns were added to support the existing facades. Facades were stripped using an environmentally friendly citrus-based paint stripper and sensitivity-shaped mesquite tools were used to avoid scratching the decorative Solomonic columns at the corner porch. The facades were re-stuccoed, new wood infill installed and finished a historic color, and metal grillework was salvaged and painted a glossy black finish. Hansel performed several site visits for inspection, review, and approval of material and methods.
