Today begins the 50-day countdown to the end of summer and a return to GSAPP. While I don't have the same feeling of dread at the prospect of returning to school as I did in middle school (nor the panic of 'What to wear???'), there is a part of me that laments the looming end of long summer days and the imminent return of long studio nights. Then again, I'm sure I'll be longing for those very same studio nights in later years!
On the bright side, there has already been many a happy moment this summer so far. I've been working in DC and enjoying it (despite the current 97 degree weather, 72% relative humidity, and 13 mosquito bites), and it seems like most other rising second-years in the MArch program have also found something interesting to do this summer, from working at a firm to traveling with GSAPP's Studio X programs. I've also worked on a little design competition with a few other students from my year, and while we didn't win (womp womp), I think we all had fun and learned a lot (how to put moustaches on each other in GoogleHangouts, among other important lessons). It also makes me wonder if competitions are what the future holds...
Speaking of the future, in the upcoming month and a half, I have a long list of things that I hope to do/ see/ at least start before the school year begins, including personal projects, travels, and local architecture trips. If I can get to 3/4 of the things on my list, I'll be a happy little GSAPPer :)
Onward and upward to day 49!!
What can happen in the last two years of architecture school? Will thinking, planning, learning, sketching, not sleeping, designing, researching, drawing, constructing, and drinking lead to innovative, powerful design solutions? The only way to tell is by reading along...
