Ale­jan­dro Ar­ave­na (1967), ar­chi­tect of the Uni­ver­si­dad Católi­ca de Chile, es­tab­lished Ale­jan­dro Ar­ave­na Ar­chi­tects in 1994. He was Vis­it­ing Pro­fes­sor at Har­vard GSD (2000-2005) and and has been named In­ter­na­tion­al Fel­low of the Roy­al In­sti­tute of British Ar­chi­tects (RI­BA). He is cur­rent­ly mem­ber of the Pritzk­er Prize Ju­ry.

His pro­fes­sion­al Work com­pris­es Ed­u­ca­tion­al fa­cil­i­ties, In­sti­tu­tion­al, Cor­po­rate, Cul­tur­al and Pub­lic build­ings, Hous­es and Hous­ing, and prod­ucts like Chair­less, man­u­fac­tured by Vi­t­ra.

He has re­ceived Awards such as the Erich Schelling Ar­chi­tec­ture Medal in 2006 (Ger­many), the Sil­ver Li­on at the XI Venice Bi­en­nale, the Mar­cus Prize in 2010 and the Avon­ni Prize for "In­no­va­tor of the Year".

Among his Books are Los He­chos de la Ar­qui­tec­tura, El Lu­gar de la Ar­qui­tec­tura and Ma­te­ri­al de Ar­qui­tec­tura, as well as, Ale­jan­dro Ar­ave­na: The Forces in Ar­chi­tec­ture by the Japanese pub­lish­ing house To­to and EL­E­MEN­TAL. In­cre­men­tal Hous­ing and Par­tic­i­pa­to­ry De­sign Man­u­al, pub­lished in 2012 by the Ger­man house Hat­je Cantz.

Pub­li­ca­tions on his work in­clude the mono­graph Ale­jan­dro Ar­ave­na, Pro­gettare e Costru­ire by Elec­ta, Ken­neth Framp­ton’s 4th edi­tion of Mod­ern Ar­chi­tec­ture; A Crit­i­cal His­to­ry, Thames & Hud­son’s 60 In­no­va­tors Shap­ing Our Cre­ative Fu­ture and books by Phaidon and Taschen. Along with mag­a­zines such as GA (Japan), Icon, Mon­o­cle and Ar­chi­tec­tural Re­view (UK), Casabel­la, Lo­tus, Abitare, The Plan and Do­mus (Italy), Ar­qui­tec­tura Vi­va (Spain), De­tail and Arch+ (Ger­many), Mark and Vol­ume (Nether­lands), Ar­chi­tec­tural Record, Dwell, Prax­is and Per­spec­ta (Unit­ed States) and oth­ers in more than 30 coun­tries.

His Lec­tures have been held in places like The Lon­don School of Eco­nomics and RI­BA in the UK, Amer­i­c­as So­ci­ety in New York, the In­ter­Amer­i­can De­vel­op­ment Bank in Wash­ing­ton, Ex­per­i­men­ta De­sign in Por­tu­gal and De­sign Ind­a­ba in South Africa, among oth­ers. He re­cent­ly took part in the 4th Hol­cim Fo­rum at Mum­bai, In­dia (2013).

Ex­hi­bi­tions on his work have been held, for ex­am­ple, at Har­vard GSD (2004), Sao Paulo Bi­en­nale (2007), Mi­lan Tri­en­nale (2008), Mo­MA (2010) and Venice Bi­en­nale (2008 and 2012). In 2011 he fea­tured in MA Gallery in Tokyo and the Whit­ney Mu­se­um in New York.

Since 2006 he's Ex­ec­u­tive Di­rec­tor of  EL­E­MEN­TAL S.A., a for prof­it com­pa­ny with so­cial in­ter­est that works in pro­jects of in­fras­truc­ture, trans­porta­tion, pub­lic space and hous­ing, as a part­ner of Uni­ver­si­dad Católi­ca de Chile and COPEC Chilean Oil Com­pa­ny.
