Los Angeles' Response to Food Injustice

Food injustice is the inaccessibility to healthy food. Grocery stores that provide healthy food are often sparse within low-income and black and brown communities. Instead, there is an array of smaller markets, liquor stores, and unhealthy fast-food restaurants. The combination of all these design decisions continue to negatively affect these communities. As a response, people are reclaiming and converting neglected land into community gardens. As architects and designers, we must recognize what communities truly need and not assume we can dive straight into design. It is vital that we listen to the clients and allow them to be a part of the design-making process.
