The Diving Board

The Diving Board is a unique and innovative building situated at the intersection of the Detroit River and canal in the heart of the Jefferson Chalmers neighborhood. It is a one-of-a-kind structure that aims to promote sustainability, inclusivity, and community development while preserving the natural environment.

The building features a stunning design that blends seamlessly into the surrounding landscape. Its unique juxtaposition of the monolithic residential landscaper and restored wildlife spaces is a true work of art. The landscaper is perched upon thin steel columns, delicately resting on the terrain. The painted steel columns are integrated into the rock gardens on the ground floor, providing a clear view of the surrounding landscape. The building’s use of mass timber adds an internationalized focus on sustainability and brings a natural element to the structure. The light structure and accents not only promote healthy habits but also improve human physiology.

Inside, The Diving Board is a diverse and inclusive community that offers a wide range of unit typologies. From efficiency studios to four-bedroom apartments, each unit is carefully designed to cater to different economic backgrounds and skills. The units are intermixed throughout the building, allowing residents to “work their way” through the building, regardless of the unit’s location. Each unit typology offers differing views, covering a wide range of experiences and preferences. The building’s design ensures that there is no prioritization for nicer units having the best views, making it an equitable and fair community for all.

The project also features a developed swimming section that protrudes into the river, offering a safe and exhilarating way to swim in the river’s fast currents. The floating platform incorporated into the project provides direct river access, inviting the public to swim, kayak, and fish, and extending the neighboring Alfred Brush Ford Park onto the site. The project further promotes water access through kayak loaning facilities and docking spots, making it easy for residents to enjoy the water in a safe and sustainable way.

The Diving Board is not just a building; it is a community that promotes inclusivity, sustainability, and healthy living. Its stunning design, diverse mix of unit typologies, and water access make it a one-of-a-kind project that sets a new standard for sustainable and inclusive community development.
