Thesis : Overlapped System

The thesis investigates the site as the convergence of natural ecosystem, industrial artifacts and human events. Architecture is treated as an assembly of systems that creates a dialogue between site, process and human experience. Sitting on the adjacent lots of the Bushwick Inlet or what used to be the Bushwick Creek, the project explores integration of beer production facilities into park programs, creating architecture for social engagement, that is of educational, environmental and entertainment purpose.

While this thesis explores the benefits of unconventional repurposing as an innovative way to create experiential spaces, it also promotes a corrective system to support the endurance of working waterfront. Waterfront industries were significant in the development of New York City and consideration should be given in the redevelopment process to explore their relationship to the urban environment. The sensible integration of new industry into the existing fabric of cities and towns is both be a challenge and an opportunity that could not only benefit the architectural discipline in creating new and integrated building typologies, but it is also a useful tool for placemaking in local neighborhoods of the city. Over the long term, the integration of production spaces in the city would reinforce the idea of making, consuming and recycling as part of a closed system, thereby creating a new sustainable paradigm for urban spaces.
