This sustainable modern beach home on Cape Cod accommodates the clients’ space requirements and environmental sensibilities while maximizing the stunning ocean views.
While the homeowner couple planned to use the place by themselves over the weekends, they also wanted enough space for the entire family, including their grown children and their families, over the summer and on holidays. To accommodate the variation in occupancy, the designers split the home into two programming zones, which would allow the extra bedrooms and bathrooms to be shut down when not in use.
In spite of the less-than-ideal west-facing glazing made unavoidable by the narrow lot size, square footage requirements, and the desire to make the water views integral to the primary living spaces, the combination of the highly energy efficient building envelope and the photovoltaic system allows the home to produce nearly as much energy as it consumes during the year. Other notable features include a geothermal system coupled with a radiant heating system for heating and cooling, energy efficient appliances and light fixtures, and healthy indoor air with an air exchange and energy recovery system and eco-friendly flooring options.
