Waitsfield, VT
Yestermorrow is offering a new Certificate in Building Science & Net Zero Design! This intensive four-week course provides a comprehensive exploration of building energy and durability in the context of both new construction and renovation. The program begins with an in-depth look at the fundamentals of building science, with a focus on moisture and thermal dynamics. Through lecture, case study, demonstration, hands-on testing, and design exercises, students will gain a firm grasp of the science behind building performance, and begin to explore how to design in accordance with the laws of physics and the forces of nature.
The course then delves specifically into the complexities of the building envelope with a focus on the principles of heat loss/gain, insulation performance, pressure plane integrity, and the use of modeling tools and methods for determining paths to success. Students explore energy-efficient heating and cooling, domestic hot water, and ventilation options, as well as renewable energy systems, including photovoltaics, solar hot water, wind, geothermal, micro-hydro, biofuel and biomass. The Certificate culminates in the application of all of this knowledge in a design practicum. Students will examine and apply performance-based design principles, processes, and implementation strategies to their own project, whether new construction or renovation.
