PROJECT #3 is a bungalow in an exclusive residential enclave of 106 semi-detached houses and 3 bungalows in central Singapore. The bungalow was envisioned, in the Master Plan, as 1 of the 2 buildings that provide visual ‘break’ to a group of semi-detached houses strung together like a ‘necklace’.

The bungalow is sited on a long and linear site, devoid of views. To avoid a wall-like structure and achieve a scale compatible with its smaller semi-detached ‘neighbours’, the permissible building mass was fragmented into smaller masses of one-room depth. The smaller building masses whilst ensuring that the interior spaces receive light, ventilation and views also resulted in rooms that are autonomous and independent of each other enabling the reconfiguration of the building’s interior spaces to meet the needs of changing family composition ensuring that the building remains relevant to its occupants over time. Equipped with a comfortable equation of communality and privacy; the massing sync with the programme of a multi-generational house.

The fragmentation, coupled with the need to comply with local planning guidelines, resulted in an architecture of prismatic, tower-like structures interspersed amongst courtyards and linked by a ‘connector’. The ‘towers’ were simply constructed in concrete and finished in 2-tone sand colours and textures like the surfaces and crevices of a rock. On the other hand, the ‘Black Connector’ is sleek and contrasting.

Moving within the interior of the bungalow, one’s experiences oscillate between alternating light and shade with orchestrated views of the landscaped courtyards in a linear arrangement.

PROJECT #3 is a new residential typology; One that is non-static with interior spaces that are capable of being grouped and regrouped in various relational diagrams to meet the needs of changing family composition. This is not common for a private house.
