A fun game to raise awareness about redacted grammar and language in historical narratives about Black History, US History.
New York, January 31, 2023 — February is Black History Month in the United States and it’s a time when individuals and organizations highlight the contributions of Black people to US History. They also use this month to inform the public about slavery and other forms of abuse that Black people experienced at the hands of White people and their systems for centuries. Unfortunately, perhaps unknown to those communicating about this history, they are using redacted grammar and language to do so, in particular the passive voice. They are not telling a full story. And so, let’s work to change that via a fun game of awareness and education: Redacted BINGO© !
“It’s a history communications scavenger hunt for many generations,” says wrkSHäp | kiloWatt, LLC founder k. Kennedy Whiters. “Excited for this latest venture to change the historical narratives about Black History!”
Throughout the month of February, when you read a historical narrative about slavery and other events related to Black History that the author wrote in the passive voice or other redacted grammar and language, mark it on your BINGO card and keep track of where you read the narrative. By February 28, 2023, send your completed Redacted BINGO© card to wrkSHäp | kiloWatt, LLC. No cash prizes for participation. Instead, public acknowledgment for playing in social media, and perhaps learn something new about Black History, US History.
After noticing in 2020 several Instagram posts that redacted facts of history with their use of the passive voice and more redacted grammar and language when they claimed to tell the full story about slavery in the United States, k. kennedy Whiters began advocating for telling fuller histories with unredacted grammar and language. In 2021, she launched a Call to Action to unRedact the Facts and followed that with a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon called unRedact-a-thon in 2022.
