Architect Barbara Bestor, Executive Director of Woodbury’s Julius Shulman Institute (JSI) and founder of the eponymous Silver Lake studio, was featured in a recent Los Angeles Times roundup in celebration of International Women’s Day coming March 8th. The article, titled, Our list of over 80 women-owned businesses in L.A. From plants to clothes to architecture, says of Bestor:

“The Silver Lake architect who originated the term “Bohemian Modern” has left her mark throughout Los Angeles, from her John Lautner updates to her Instagram-friendly retail spaces, small-lot housing in the hills of Echo Park and countless private residences.”

Barbara has led JSI at Woodbury for over a decade, after the late Julius Shulman left the school a generous endowment to continue his legacy and support future pioneers in photography.

Every year, the Institute bestows its coveted annual Excellence in Photography Award, given to a photographer who honors Shulman’s legacy by challenging the way we look at physical space. Awardees have included Iwan Baan (2010), Pedro Guerrero (2012), Catherine Opie (2013), and James Welling (2016). This year, Chicago-based photographer Lee Bey has been awarded the 2021 Excellence in Photography Award.
