The Hospital Hospitality House of Southwest Michigan was established in 1985 as a collaborative effort between the hospitals and Junior League to promote the use of Kalamazoo-based treatment centers and to provide no-cost accommodations for patients and families facing serious medical challenges. The House provides far more than just a safe place to sleep. It provides a homelike setting with kitchen and laundry facilities, personal care items, comfortable rooms, and a 24-hour, caring and compassionate staff.
Each year, the Hospital Hospitality House of Southwest Michigan provides more than 3,000 guest nights of service. We have accommodated families from all 50 states and many foreign countries, with two-thirds of our guests from Southwest Michigan.
The current home on South Street has accessibility, efficiency and privacy limitations that pose challenges for the guests and the staff. Research affirms the value of providing for the physical comfort and emotional needs of families during a medical crisis so that they may participate fully with the medical team as partners in care. New modern cottages will be more convenient and comfortable for the guests.
The Hospital Hospitality House is constructing and outfitting two fully accessible modern cottages, adjacent to each of Kalamazoo’s major hospital campuses. The cottages will provide barrier-free accessibility, increased privacy and convenience for guests and closer proximity to each hospital.
