A reuse of an historical steam plant in Eugene, OR. This building would be part of a master plan to revitalize an abandoned utility property alongside the Willamette River and connect downtown to this beautiful natural setting. The design is driven by the goals of connection between the city and the river, restoration of the riparian habitat, and flexibility. A wide variety of views to the river are provided, some indoors, some exterior. Gallery spaces are made flexible by a steel framework that supports movable wall panels. A theatre on the main floor can be reconfigured with the help of a hydraulic floor and retractable seating. Throughout, the historical structure and artifacts across the site have a visible presence that contrasts with new spaces that are expand the building's footprint.
