About

Vedanta Balbahadur is a licensed architect and teacher who received his professional masters in architecture from McGill University.  A native Montrealer, he has lived in Vancouver, the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, and New York City.  Vedanta founded his practice in 2018 in Montreal (Canada), where he also collaborates regularly with EKM Architecture.  From 2006-2014, he was an integral member of Saucier + Perrotte architectes, where he worked on Canadian and international projects that have been published the world over.  Prior to this, he worked for Studio Daniel Libeskind in New York.  A LEED accredited professional, Vedanta is known for combining a progressive design ethic with a user/client-oriented approach.

Vedanta is a design studio coordinator and instructor at the McGill University Peter Guo-hua Fu School of Architecture.  He also teaches the course "Physical Environment, Sustainability, and Contemporary Culture" (at the McGill University School of Continuing Studies), which is specifically tailored to students from diverse majors and introduces them to key concepts in architecture, art, design, and the urban environment.  He has been an invited critic and lecturer for graduate and undergraduate studios/courses at University of Toronto, University of Waterloo, Carleton University, Concordia University, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and Université de Montréal.

Vedanta believes that architecture must spring from a poetic vision, take an ethical stance in society, and contribute to the welfare of the built environment and its inhabitants through innovation in design and sustainable strategies.  His work has afforded him the opportunity to pursue projects that push boundaries — something he also seeks to do with his photography, which has focused his outlook on architecture and the urban environment.  Awards he has received include the Gerald Sheff Award for Teaching, Prix de la Fondation Habitat ’67, the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts / Eberhard Zeidler Scholarship for Architecture, McGill’s Ping Kwan Lau Prize in Architecture, inclusion on the RAIC Honour Roll, and the National School Orchestra Award.  Vedanta’s writing, photography, and architectural thesis project have been featured in Satellite Magazine and Building Magazine.
