Don't talk, but act: improvement of shopping district

The Rokin in Amsterdam is a shopping street in the city centre. The Rokin area was a construction site for the new subway for more than 15 years. Due to the long construction process the citizens from Amsterdam had forgotten the street. To get back in the imaginary of the citizens we proposed to temporarily transform the area and generate activities in the public space. After many conversations with the shop owners and the municipality we made a new square in the summer of 2015.

The idea was very simple. In the fall of 2016, after completion of the subway line, the municipality would start with the renovation of the public space that was part of the “red carpet”, a public space from Amsterdam Central Station to the south Station. We took the idea for "red carpet" as starting point for the temporarily site. We created a new square by putting a red carpet on top of the construction site and made space to sit, perform and relax. During the summer of 2015 the new square was a new place in the city centre and attracted tourists and many local citizens to the shopping street.
