The films selected for the 2011 ArCH Film festival speak to the broad topic of Architecture with each central character challenging any static definition. Humanitarian, aesthete, modernist. Three architects and three careers in multiple generations, whose basic design principles and sense of design responsibility are embraced in architecture today. Join us this August as we investigate a shifting perception of the architect.
Each evening the featured film will be preceded by a collection of juried short films by students at the Rice School of Architecture and the University of Houston’s College of Architecture. Student films were made as a part of supplemental curriculum and are not necessarily about architecture, students, school, or anything in particular. Come see what plays in the minds of future architects…
August 11, 7pm Regular or Super: Views on Mies van der Rohe
$10 / Free for ArCH Members*
Did you know that Mies van der Rohe designed a gas station? The story of that gas station serves as the point of departure for REGULAR OR SUPER, which examines Mies' entire body of work (more than 70 buildings) and a sparse style that reflects his motto that "less is more."
August 12, 7pm VDL Research House: Richard Neutra's Studio and Residence
$10 / Free for ArCH Members*
Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright and Louis Sullivan, Neutra immigrated to the US to be a part of what he perceived to be the future of architecture. Explore the "physiologically motivated design" of Richard Nuetra’s studio and residence in L.A. from a firsthand perspective.
August 13, 7pm Citizen Architect with a Q&A discussion with filmmaker Sam Wainwright Douglas
$20 / Free for ArCH Member*
Architecture and activism in practice, Citizen Architect is the story of Samuel Mockbee and Auburn University’s Rural Studio. The documentary follows Mockbee’s vision in Hale County, Alabama. Commentary from architects, academics, locals, and students colors in this discussion of class, poverty, race, architecture, design, and education.
